Pulaski County Fan Pages: What made you and Jeff decide to start Rural Trash?
Barb Smith: Our family was in a desperate financial need. We gambled that about $80 worth of painted plywood on the back of our pickup, along with hard work and a smile on our faces would someday prove successful. At the time, that was a HUGE financial risk for us so failure was NOT an option.
PCFP: Rural Trash is family owned and operated. How do the kids pitch in?
BS: Our daughter drives and picks up garbage full time and sometimes her daughter (our grand-daughter, Paisley) gets to ride along!
PCFP: What sets Rural Trash apart from the other trash removal companies in the area?
BS: We hope that it is our level of customer service combined with a very reasonable rate sets us apart from other companies.
We communicate often with customers through our website, email, Facebook and even some text messaging. Our motto has become, "If we are awake, we'll answer".
PCFP: After the trash goes into your truck, where does it go from there?
BS: We dump it at the St. Robert Transfer Station where they transfer it to the landfill in Hartville, MO
PCFP: What are some of the items that the transfer station can not accept?
BS: Tires, TVs, Computer Monitors, Oil or Paint Cans that are not empty, Yard Waste and anything that is a known biological, toxic or otherwise hazardous waste.
PCFP: Waste Collector made CNNMoney.com’s list of most dangerous jobs in America. Is this something that affects Rural Trash?
BS: Yes, as it affects all waste collectors. We try to make ourselves and our trucks very visible to motorists.
PCFP: What plans do you have to expand your fleet?
BS: We let customer demand dictate when and what types of equipment we purchase. It appears that we will again add more equipment sometime next spring or summer.
PCFP: How has Rural Trash’s Facebook page impacted your business?
BS: We are pleasantly surprised by the amount of customer interaction and new customers acquired through Facebook.
PCFP: Other than Rural Trash, what is your favorite hidden gem of Pulaski County?
BS: Our favorite hidden gem is anywhere that our grand-daughter is at the time!
PCFP: Anything else that you would like to add?
BS: Please bag your trash! :)
